Cat showing? 3 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello everyone!

I adore cats, and have lived with them pretty much my entire life--until recently when my pretty Russian Blue passed away.

I've been recently looking into cat breeds, and I think that I would like to learn more about cat shows to see if this would be something I'd like to do. Right now, it's an interest and a fancy, but I take good care of cats and I'd like to show that fact off.

Any suggestions for resources on where to go to learn more, and perhaps get involved?

The best way to learn about cat shows is to visit one! Find a show near you by visiting:
http://www.tica.org http://www.cfa.org

Talk to breeders. Get to know the various breeds and see which one(s) catch your fancy. If you think that cat showing is something you may be interested in, ask a breeder, whose cats you like the looks of, if they have any kittens, cats, or retired breeding cats that might make a good competitive candidate in the Alter class. Our first Premiership CFA regional winner was a cat that had been shown as a whole cat, but the breeder didn't need in her breeding program. She neutered him and we had a wonderful time showing him! He was already used to the show hall so it was even better than starting out with a kitten.

I have been to a couple shows myself I have some experience but I only started showing Persians last year. Happy to say on my third show in Cambridge Ontario at the Golden Triangle CFA show my red and white male Persian Dante championed. Showing is very addictive, I rather enjoy being at the shows it is amazing getting together with other cat Fanciers talking about the shows and breeding. There can be a lot of traveling involved for serious breeders/showers. I love showing but considering the flow of work where I live showing constantly is difficult but easy when you partner up with someone.

I partnered with my breeder for a while but she ran into trouble with family and work so she had to leave the show life. But showing is great, good therapy too. If I had a choice I would choose showing and breeding as a career. But choose your breed carefully talk to breeder and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. All breeders should be registered with CFA plus other registries. They should be very knowledgeable about the breed, able to answer any questions you have. If it seems they are trying to push a sale do not purchase that animal.

If you truely want to get into showing your best bet is to go on the CFA website and sign up for the mentor program. Or team up with a breeder who is into showing so they can show you. |Partners in showing and breeding make things a lot easier. And a lot more fun because you have someone to share your breed and passion. Hope this helps.
